Three checks before you trust the image

Use the largest, least-compressed version available. A small social-media copy contains less evidence than the original.

Find who first published the image and whether they disclosed generation or editing. Reposts can remove that context.

Separate the file from the caption. A real photograph can support a false claim, while an openly generated illustration may be used honestly.

A detector answers only one part of “is this AI?”

The useful answer is rarely a bare yes or no. An image check can surface visual evidence associated with AI generation, while the source tells you where the file came from and the context explains how it is being presented.

Start with the detector result, then search for the earliest available copy, inspect any creation disclosure and compare the image with other material from the same event, seller or account.

When the honest answer is uncertain

Edited, unknown and lower-confidence classifications remain uncertain. Do not force them into “real” or “AI.” If the original cannot be found, state what is known, what the detector returned and what remains unverified.

What should I do when the result is uncertain?

Try to obtain a clearer original, check the publishing source and look for creation records. Uncertainty is a valid result when the evidence does not support a strong conclusion.

Can visual mistakes prove an image is AI?

No. Unusual hands, text, reflections or lighting can be clues to investigate, but compression, editing and ordinary photographic artifacts can create similar effects.

Can a real photo still be misleading?

Yes. An authentic camera image may be old, staged, cropped or paired with a false caption. Image-generation detection does not verify the claim attached to a photograph.
